We just put the finishing touches on the playground at Bob Halloran Community Park in Garden City, KS. This project was a collaboration with SWT Design. We really enjoyed being a part of this unique playground project!
The park was initially called "Southeast Park" during its development phase. However, the City Commission officially named it "Bob Halloran Community Park" to honor former City Manager Bob Halloran.
The playground features a HUGE playground structure with three massive tube slides. The structure is attached to the sidewalk that leads to the top of a hill with an ADA ramp. This allows wheelchair access to the play structure directly from the sidewalk. In addition to the inclusive structure design, there is also an inclusive merry-go-round carousel, ball spinner, and swings that provide ample play value for kids of all abilities.
One of my favorite features of the playground is the turfed hill. There are half sphere hill climbers dotted across the hill that create lots of unique climbing routes. There is also an embankment slide at the highest point of the hill that leads right back down into the playground.
The playground features both pour-in-place and synthetic turf surfacing. The pour-in-place makes it feel like the playground is made up of islands in the water while the turf on the hill provides a contrasting surfacing texture.
Currently the park is expected to open in spring of 2025. We’re excited to see it with the landscaping finished and most importantly… with kids playing on it! We hope this playground is a value to the residents of Garden City for years to come.
